Community Service -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Community service is not required for graduation, however students are strongly encouraged to participate in community service. This will earn you a high school credit. If you earn 200 hours or more, you will receive a purple cord and be recognized at graduation. Community Service is a valuable part of our society. Students learn a wide variety of people skills as well as respect, responsibility, and accountability. Also, many scholarships are now based on community service. Sponsors want to see students who are involved not only in their school, but in their community as well. Students should remember that hours can only be earned before and after school, from a nonrelative, and only when services are not paid. Community service consists of volunteer work to benefit the community. The school is considered part of the community so time spent on Tiger Pride Days (formerly Sparkle Days) counts as well as reading to children, tutoring at the elementary or middle schools, volunteering at hospitals, nursing homes, shelters, etc. Guidelines: cannot
be during school hours
cannot
be for a relative cannot be paid babysitting does not count 135 hours = 1 credit 200 hours = cords at graduation Examples: Hutchison Medical Center, NHC Nursing home, animal shelters, TN Aquarium, Chattanooga Zoo, local churches (mission trips, etc)
